We have been in development on the RVR reels for more than two years. We started with a groundbreaking and beautifully modern design and quickly found out how challenging it is to machine a reel this complex. No one had ever seen anything like it. The complexity and double anodized design of the RVR would prove too difficult to achieve on a conventional 3-Axis machine, so we sought out the newest 5-Axis machines available. The result speaks for itself.
SPECIALIZED TROUT REELS FOR A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES.
Small streams and spring creeks are the ideal waters for 2 and 3wt fishing. You’re not likely to ever need 70 yards of backing here, or a drag capable of stopping a steelhead. What you will need is a lightweight reel designed with the smaller capacity and perfect drag for those very special angling situations.
The line and backing capacity, drag and weight of this reel have been appropriately designed for the more sizeable trout, larger water, longer casts and more varied techniques associated with 4 and 5wt rods. Whether you’re fishing a floating line or a light sink tip, whether fishing dries or wets, this is the ideal reel.
A larger reel for the heavier line weights used when targeting trophy fish with large, wind-resistant or heavy flies. The increased backing capacity is more than sufficient to handle even the longest running trout. Intended applications are streamer fishing with floating or sink-tip lines, stillwater angling with floating, intermediate and full-sinking lines, as well as handling the aggressively-tapered lines needed to turn over large dry flies, poppers, articulated streamers, and double nymph rigs.
The super large arbor of this reel design addresses the unique capacity requirements of the level lines used in European-style nymphing. The spool size and capacity is greatly reduced as these fly lines don’t have the typical thick belly like a traditional fly line. Hi-stickers, your reel has arrived.
Specifically designed for Micro Spey angling, this reel handles 3, 4, and 5 weight spey lines. This model features a full frame to prevent thin running line from slipping out of the reel. The weight of this reel has been carefully considered to balance the longer, two-handed rods used for Trout Spey. Reel capacities accommodate the wide variety of Scandi and Skagit style lines available.

RVR Trout reels are midnight black with a secondary gold anodizing.
RVR Euro-Nymph and RVR Microspey reels are midnight black with lasered accents.
First thing out of the box the reel felt light, but solid at the same time. Even though the new RVR has a larger diameter than the RX4. It also has a familiar feel of lineage to the RX4. But that’s where the similarity stops. The engineers have taken an modern approach to the design of this reel. The beautiful scalloped machine work on the sold frame, the redesign of the handle which feels just right, and the new spool release is easy to use. A counter balance on the spool is so seamless that it becomes unnoticeable. However, the laced spokes of the spool undeniably scream, I am new, and ready to perform!
Which gets me to the important stuff. The drag is smooth, strong, and quiet! Even while fishing on a cold winter day, I had no problems with freezing up, even after repeated dunking. Also, I tested the reel on the Winston MS 10’6” 3wt. and, the 11’ 4wt. The reel balanced brilliantly on both. The RVR felt just right!
I had the chance to spend some time on a local trout stream with the new RVR reel from Bauer. The machining is unique and unlike anything else I’ve seen to date. The RVR feels both light and yet solid. It doesn’t have the flex and vulnerability I expected from such a heavily ported design. The Bauer drag has long been very smooth and a great performer, this reel continues in that tradition. Overall the reel performed flawlessly and achieved just what I look for in a trout reel; smooth drag, quick line pick up and trouble free operation. A great choice for those looking for a top of the line trout reel.
